Where they actually matter locally
Crawl spaces, not basements
Full basements are rare in San Diego. Most local sump work is in crawl spaces, at properties on a slope, or where drainage collects against a foundation.
Winter rain events
Our rain arrives in concentrated bursts. A pump that has sat unused for months is exactly the one that fails on the night it is finally needed.
Properties below street grade
Driveways and entries that sit lower than the road often rely on a pump to keep water away from the structure.
Service and installation
Annual testing
Pour water in and confirm the float switch triggers, the pump runs, and the discharge actually goes somewhere useful. Ten minutes that prevents a flooded crawl space.
Float switch failures
The most common failure point by a wide margin. The motor is usually fine; the switch that tells it to run is not.
Discharge routing
A pump that discharges too close to the foundation just recycles the same water. Routing matters as much as the pump.
Battery backup
Storms and power cuts arrive together. If the pump is protecting anything you care about, a backup is worth discussing.
